Hospital Propaganda: Sick of It Yet?

Erica Garman at 11:13 a.m., September 30, 2008 (15 comments)

With the fate of an Ashburn hospital in play, the public relations machines from all fronts are annoying bombarding Loudoun citizens almost daily with mailings, newspaper ads and web information as to why the proposed Broadlands Regional Medical Center should, or should not, be approved.

Here’s the latest in online propaganda for your review.

From the Concerned Citizens of Broadlands: Check out this video featuring an elevated, noisy and traffic-inducing health care facility.

From Broadlands Regional Medical Center: Check out this Web site featuring taped video snippets of Loudoun residents who support the proposed hospital. (Unfortunately, we couldn’t embed any of the videos here, since there wasn’t any code publicly available.)

Do either of these communication efforts influence your opinion regarding BRMC? Why or why not? Let us know below in the comments field.

And, don’t forget, if you feel strongly one way or another, let your voice be heard. The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing in the Eagle Ridge Middle School auditorium at 6 p.m. on Oct. 15.

Apparently, a few speakers showed up for the originally scheduled hearing last Thursday who hadn’t heard that the meeting had been postponed.

From day 1, Inova and CCB (who are the same entity) have run a negative, fear-mongering campaign, just like in politics.
I DETEST these campaigns.
I have also been a supporter of A hospital as one is needed soonest in Loudoun. Is Broadlands the perfect site, probably not. But if it is not built, Loudoun will not see another hospital in 10-15 years! UNACCEPTABLE!
Oh, and HCA will pay millions in taxes which we also desperately need

There was a time I didn't care one way or the other. But Innova, which could have traded on all the good things they do in the community, has come across as the schoolyard bully with fear tactics and heavy-handed marketing. They've actually made HCA - the real 800-pound gorilla of the healthcare world - look like a sympathetic figure. Whoever is handling their marketing and strategy needs to realize they're not influencing our opinion...they're insulting our intelligence.

Inova is a business. They promote a lot of fluff and noise about how they are special but they are just another business providing healthcare services. They do not want another hospital nearby because they do not want the competition and it may hurt their business. The citizens seem to be their last consideration. We need more healthcare services and the HCA hospital should be built.

The major thing I am getting sick of is the print media giving credence to the CCoB. We are beyond wondering; this group is a total ruse. For the media or anyone else for that matter to give this supposed group a voice in the debate, WITHOUT a caveat to their motives is a mis-justice. The CCoB is funded by Inova, run by Inova consultants and employees, and has absolutely nothing to do with the citizens. It amazes me that they continue to get exposure. Just because they keep at it, doesn't make things different. Just because they continue to be paid to speak at BOS meetings doesn't make anything different. Please stop enabling this bogus group.

Lets desolve all their tax breaks and see who is standing when the smoke clears!

Inova is a monopoly which both conservatives and liberals agree is bad for both business and consumers. The Justice Department agreed by blocking Inova's acquisition of the hospital in PWC. Inova's position that they don't oppose HCA coming to Loudoun, just the Broadlands location, is a ruse to kick the can down the street another couple of years, avoiding competition and hoping that HCA will tire of the fight and simply go away.

I agree the Broadlands site my not be the optimal location. However, there is demonstrable need for second hospital in Loudoun. There is also desperate need for an expanded commercial tax and job base.

Last year while giving blood at an Inova bloodmobile, Inova had the nerve to have its employees lobby me against HCA while they had a needle in my arm. I asked the employee wouldn't he be better off if he had two hospitals bidding against each other for his professional services?

Inova is supposed to be a non profit. One can only wonder how much benefit would have been derived if the $ spent fighting HCA had instead been used to provide healthcare to the underserved in our community.

Whats funny is that nobody seems to get that having two hospitals so close together will actually create two poor hospitals! Why kill one good one to get two subpar ones when we can have two great ones where they are most needed (Rt. 50).

Forgot one thing -- if anyones been paying attention these past few weeks, looks like HCA may be heading down the same road as Lehman, Wachovia and Merrill Lynch (who has an ownership stake in them btw!) ... Looks like they may have to apply for a piece of the $700 billion bailout. Is that why their CEO retird now -- so he can get is fair share before the limits are enacted? Exactly why Wall Street shouldn't be delivering health care -- and we want them here in Loudoun???? http://peureport.blogspot.com/2008/10/ja...

" Looks like they may have to apply for a piece of the $700 billion bailout"-
Wow, locoguy....Are you part of Inova's machine, because that's in incredibly poor taste.
" But Innova, which could have traded on all the good things they do in the community, has come across as the schoolyard bully with fear tactics and heavy-handed marketing"
Hey, HP...wait till you get a load of the extortion they recently involved themselves in. To the Mayors of Lovettsville, Purcellville and Middleburg--you either publicly denounce HCA --OR-- we'll delay your healthcare centers for another eternity.
Cause, if HCA comes to town, we won't be able to afford those hubs, since we've spent like $5 MIL on this neagative campaign, and all.

The only reason Cornwall reopened and these "healthplexes" were even proposed was because of the threat of competition.
If BRMC is approved, do you really think Inova is going to back off and turn over all future healthcare in Loudoun to HCA? I doubt it.
