Energy Efficient Mondays in October

Erica Garman at 1:00 p.m., October 6, 2008 (9 comments)

To highlight Loudoun County’s declaration of October as Energy Efficiency & Conservation Month, Living in LoCo will post an item each Monday this month about local “green” happenings and initiatives that may help you save money, protect the environment and reduce your household’s energy consumption.

Join a “Green” Group
Sustainable Loudoun (formerly, LCCSS, Loudoun County Committee for a Sustainable Society) formed in 2005 to promote “an environmental stewardship and the sustainable use of resources.” The organization’s next meeting is Tuesday at the Loudoun County Cooperative Extension Office, 30-B Catoctin Circle, S.E., in Leesburg.

Conserve Water and Save Money
The Loudoun Soil and Conservation District is sponsoring two rain barrel workshops this month: 6 p.m. Thursday at the Old Hillsboro Schoolhouse in Hillsboro and 10 a.m. on Oct. 20 at the Heritage Farm Museum in Sterling.

These barrels can hold up to 50 gallons of collected rain water from downspouts that can then be used to water plants, wash muddy hands or even clean up that dirty dog or car. The workshop fee is $50 per barrel, and registration is required. To see what a rain barrel looks like and to get registration information, click here.

Let Your Eco-Friendly Voice Be Heard
Loudoun’s newly formed Energy Efficiency Committee has scheduled a listening session for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Loudoun County Government Center in Leesburg. Share your energy-saving ideas or concerns with some of Loudoun’s key decision makers. Individuals may present for five minutes; groups are allocated 10. To pre-register your speaking time, contact Denise Reyes at 703-777-0202, and for more information about the event call Diane O’Grady at 703-737-8074.

Buy Energy-Efficient Appliances
In honor of Energy Efficiency & Conservation Month, the commonwealth has designated this weekend - Friday through Monday - as Virginia’s Energy Star and WaterSense Sales Tax Holiday. At participating retailers, the state sales tax will be lifted on the following Energy Star and WaterSense products under $2,500 for non-commercial use: bathroom sink faucets, compact fluorescent light bulbs, ceiling fans, clothes washers, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, programmable thermostats, refrigerators, room air conditioners and toilets.

Got some energy-saving tips to share? Please post them in the comments fields below.

LCCSS is now back to the name they had ~ten years ago. And before they were the Sustainable Loudoun Network, they were the Loudoun Sustainable Network. It all works out!

*Sigh*
.
Our bitter factually challenged neighbor Babs just can't resist commenting on a group of folks she has never met, who formed a group she has never been a member of. She actually outdid herself this time, by getting EVERY ASPECT OF HER COMMENT WRONG.
.
It takes a special touch to be wrong on every count....but Babs rises to the occasion.

Whatever happened to "Mainstream" Loudoun, the folks who got on Hugh Heffner's holiday card list for fighting porn filters in the library. Seems like their web site hasn't been updated in years.

Sorry AFF, I guess you've forgotten. Or maybe you didn't live here yet, who knows.

It all started as Loudoun Sustainable Network, back when the current Field Officer was spelling their name with a C instead of a G. (They signed the Loudoun's Future petition with both versions, as well as the nickname they more commonly use)

Then they were the Sustaniable Loudoun Network.

Then they were just plain Sustainable Loudoun.

THEN they were the Loudoun County Committee for a Sustainable Society, which has apparently just changed back to plain old Sustainable Loudoun.

My guess is they finished the new stationery, and being eco-minded (as well as most likely short on donations now that the local campaign season is over) they are just back to one of the old boxes again.

I've met quite a few of the usuals.

The only thing new under the sun is that which has been forgotten or somesuch, and nowhere is it truer than a place full of people who moved here just last month to a suburban lot "in the country".

Nope. Per usual you're wrong.........and not worth my time you bitter woman.

Actually, no.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/loc...

That is a WaPo article from 99 quoting Sustainable Loudoun, and the next is the profile of the PEC officer who started with Loudoun Sustainable, which became Sustainable Loudoun, and VSS.

All of which are basically spinoffs of PEC.

She has a degree in ecopsychology. Interesting!

If I'm not worth your time (you angry-sounding man?), why keep responding?

It's true, whether you are capable of admitting it or not.

LCCSS was the very first name of the group now called Sustainable Loudoun- LCCSS was formed post 2003. The principals had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PEC.
.
I attended the very first meeting- where were you?
.
You have obviously confused two different organizations who perhaps have similar agendas. I know you see the evil PEC behind every environmental action organization in Virginia, but you are a bitter delusional easily mistaken woman with a lot of free time on her hands.

You are a stitch, aff.

It was THE VERY FIRST name of a group ten or more years old, eh? Okay.

If you were at THE VERY FIRST MEETING of this iteration, you have more time on your hands than I do.

Yes, this version appeared post 03. That was when it was revived under a new new new name.

And now its gone back to an old one.

Next?
