New Group Supports Ashburn Hospital

To counter the Concerned Citizens of Broadlands, a group that opposes a new hospital in Ashburn, a handful of community members have formed an organization in support of the Broadlands Regional Medical Center.

Broadlands Residents for BRMC claims to be fully maintained and funded by residents only, says founding member Jeanne Fisher. The group claims no affiliation with or financial support from HCA, BRMC, or the Broadlands homeowners association.

"We just want to show the planning commission and the Board of Supervisors that there is support in the community for the hospital," Fisher said. "Something will be built on that lot and a hospital will have less of an impact than an office park-- An office park won't give us $11 million in road improvements, a 4 acre lot for community use, or a tree buffer."

It is important to note that Fisher, a Broadlands resident, did work as a paid administrative employee of BRMC for a short period a few years ago. "I started out as a volunteer in support of the hospital," she clarified. Her employment with BRMC ended in spring 2006.

Meanwhile, the Concerned Citizens of Broadlands group is receiving harsh criticism on the Broadlands Forums hospital thread. Being questioned is how the group obtained personal emails and how the addresses ended up on CCB's distribution list-- when residents say they never gave their info to the group.

Some speculate that CCB's founder and Inova Loudoun Hospital employee, Donna Fortier, gathered contact information from other groups she volunteered with, and included the emails on the CCB supporter distribution list.

When asked to respond to these claims, Donna told me on the phone today: "This is just another attempt by HCA and some of its supporters to try to detract from the real issue which is location and following the CPAM already in place."

Fortier recently announced that she is no longer involved with CCB, and the latest email correspondence from the group does give recipients the choice to be removed from the list.

It's rumored that ILH has hired a new public relations firm. If true, expect another big Inova campaign soon.

Che Parker, spokesman for the Inova Hospital System would not comment on news of new pr help, writing in an email earlier today that it is the company's policy not to comment on vendors or consultants.

I am a habitual poster to the Broadlands forums and I have NEVER seen or heard of any HCA involvement in any thread. I know people can remain anonymous behind their usernames but I know most of the people who post and none of them are HCA employees. For Donna F. to try an lump HCA in with a bunch of Broadlands posters criticising her and possibly Inova is wrong.

The site plan above shows the plans for the proposed 164 bed hospital and medical office buildings. A 1,000,000 sq. foot office building complex can be built by-right on that property with 8 multi story buildings and lots of parking lots. There would be almost no buffer and parking lights on 24 hours a day. Here is a comparison of one by-right office scenario and the proposed hospital.

The hospital plan provides for a very generous buffer and the buildings would be more than 800 feet from the closest house. This entire property is zoned for commercial and will be built out one way or the other. The hospital is by far the better option. The office complex would also create far more car trips per day and mostly during rush hour. Check out the facts.

We moved to Broadlands 4 years ago with the understanding that this hospital was going to be built. I'm assuming that the people who are against it also knew that it was coming or that some other commercial buildings were going to be built before they purchased their homes. Why are people against it? It can only help our property values and draw people to the area. Also, we are in desperate need of more hospital beds in this county. I should know. I had to wait for 12 hours to be moved to one a few months ago at Lansdowne. Doesn't it seem logical that if our county is growing at the rate it has been for the last 10 years (we've built numerous schools to accommodate the growth), that we would need a suitable amount of hospitals as well? You just don't consider it until you are in need of one. Also, with this highly regarded pediatric center, I would think that we would be embracing this project. This is a family community with many children. Wouldn't you rather have a children's hospital just a few minutes away rather than 40 minutes away, especially when they say that in a trauma that the first hour is the most important? Think about it.
