Loudoun County’s New Anthem?

Erica Garman at 12:01 p.m., April 2, 2008 (21 comments)

Meade Skelton grew up in Loudoun -- he lived in Leesburg, Sterling and Philomont.

The 28-year-old graduated from Leesburg Christian School in 1997 and now resides in Richmond, where he is pursuing a full-time music career.

What inspired Skelton to write “My Loudoun County Home?”

“I have fond memories of Loudoun County and I wanted to write a biographical song about growing up there,” he said.

Skelton uploaded a performance of his song to You Tube six months ago and it caught the eye of an America’s Polo Cup staffer who passed it on to Tareq Salahi, chairman and founder of the event.

"When my wife, Michaele, and I heard Meade Skelton's song, we knew it was a perfect fit for the event. Meade is a homegrown talent and he is clearly proud of his roots in Loudoun County. We thought that our event would be the perfect platform to showcase not only his talent, but this magnificent song about our host county."

Skelton will perform his song at the America’s Polo Cup on May 10 at Morven Park in Leesburg.

As a biographical song, fine.

As the County Anthem?

Well, we are no longer outside the DC suburbs, we are part of them.

What message does the polo cup intend to send by showcasing a song whose chorus wails about "greedy developers"?

Another message to the business community, and Richmond, that this is never-never land.

Dear God that is horrendous -- please make it go away -- certainly not the loudoun I know.

I think its a wonderful song! I was born and raised there and I feel that the truth be told- the developers really are destroying the history of the area. Thank God at least Western Loudoun has been preserved. I think Meade Skelton fellow has talent, and I appreciate his sentiments. Beautiful song, beautiful voice.

I guess some people think "progress" in Loudoun means having a Starbucks on every corner. For those of us who feel different, the song speaks volumes of what we're going through. My family has been farming in this area of generations, and we had to sell most of the farm and some of them went out to Oklahoma. I live in Purcellville now and I cant stand how people just use the town as a bedroom community for D.C. Why dont they just go live in D.C. instead of here? Why do they bother. They hate the country folks, but they want all the convenience of the suburbs. Its pathetic.

We don't have to discuss the meaning of "progress" to acknowledge the fact of change.

And for anyone living in a house built in the past 20 years (i.e. most of them), this song is a lament that they exist.

I just don't think that's much of an incentive to buy polo tickets. (or to urge my supervisor to vote to give the polo cup money, especially after this budget)

This song doesn't quite make the cut for an 'anthem' or a polo match. On the other hand I can't think of anyone singing a sentimental ballad about life in the 'burbs either! I'm afraid there is little about the monotonous, homogenity of tract houses to set the soul stirring!

I don't live in the area, but the same sort of thing has happened around where I live. The people that have lived here for years have been very upset about the conversion of the natural prairie into housing developments. The people moving into the area like it. The ones here before don't because they knew the value of the undeveloped land for the wildlife and the area economy. The new developments bring a different kind of economic growth, but, the farm and rural economy is lost at the same time.
I love the song. It's a from the heart folk song which seems to be a dying art. It maybe written about Loudoun County but it could so easily have been for the area where I live, and I'm sure many many other places in our beautiful country.

To me the song doesnt seem like its anti-anything, its just honest and truthful. The song is obviously about the boy's life growing up in Loudoun. Now when he grew up there- all that development was just starting-(at least I think, if he is 28 years old now he probably grew up there in 1980s and 1990s) and his sentiments echo those of those who lived there when Loudoun wasn't so swamped in plastic. I dont have anything against the developers- but enough is enough! You dont have to make a development on every inch of the county to keep it thriving.

The beautiful countryside of Loudoun County that is being ravaged by GREEDY DEVELOPERS and turned into a wasteland of fertilized lawns with power-eating McMansions sprawling over hill and dale, is some of the most fertile land in the United States. What a travesty. It is heartbreaking to witness.

It's just a fact that there are TOO MANY PEOPLE and TOO MANY CARS and TOO MANY McMANSIONS. And what now? Now that the BOOM has gone BUST? People are moving back to the cities, where they should have stayed. Meanswhile, our taxes are up and our quality of life is down. Loudoun County is in a kind of war.

Life in bedroom communities can be so isolating and disappointing and dismal.
No wonder so many of the people who have moved in here seem so unhappy. I would love to continue my rant, but I have to catch a plane.

BRAVO, MEADE SKELTON for your beautiful
voice, your heartfelt song, and the courage to sing out the truth!!!

Loudoun County now belongs to the Yankees and the Carpetbaggers. I live in Roanoke now, but I spent my teen years up there back in the late 70s and early 80s. It was just starting to get bad around that time. By the time I graduated high school, the prices were going up and my family was ready to move. I go up there to visit , but I could NEVER live there again. Leesburg is not even the same. Its very transient, and people just lack manners.

Meade Skelton is an internet troll.

Most of the "replies" in this thread have been forged by Meade himself.

For years, his modus operandi has been to troll interent forums and discussion groups to advertise his name.

Complaints against Meade's behavior have been made on sites like Wikipedia, city-data.com, and several other blog & forum sites.

Apparently he has now focused his attention on this site.

Do not be fooled. Meade is a complete fraud.

This Meade Skelton song is the hipster style of country. It is an interesting song, but his voice is not very strong. This would be better received at a childrens fair rather than the Polo Cup. I hope the organizers dont make that mistake again.

The Loudoun County anthem should be an homage to materialism, similar to what is churned out by most hip hop artists.

I agree with foobar2. A hiphop song would be a much better representation of what is now the DC suburbs.

"indecision214" is meade skelton himself posing as a "fan".

he's an internet troll who posts all over the place, alternately posing as "fans" of his music or obsessively honing his fake southern persona.

FOLKS< MEADE SKELTON is indeed an internet troll whose career is to get his name on the net as often as possible. If you google his YOUTUBE fiascos you will see what I mean. It is indeed true that he posts new identities to respond to himself. This is one sad/sick pup.

I know Meade Skelton personally. Hes a wonderful musician and very nice, and some times a bit shy . I don't know where people are saying hes some sort of troll. Meade is busy and I don't think hes the type to spend a lot of time promoting himself on the internet and such. I am not sure I like people smearing his name like this, which borders on the level of character asassination. However, people are free to express their views. Meade Skelton is very nice, and what people are saying doesn't sound like the guy I know.
