Tick, Tick, Tick: Lyme Disease in Loudoun

Susie Dorsch, 39, of Ashburn, just finished six weeks of intravenous antibiotic treatments to combat Lyme disease. The mother of four continues to suffer from aches, fatigue and a low-grade fever. There were 215 cases of Lyme disease reported in the county during the last six months of 2007, and Loudoun’s rate of Lyme disease is about 20 times greater than that of the Virginia average. Traffic Troubles? So Far, Purcellville Shows Its Woes

Now that NVTA’s bank account is kaput, the authority was hoping that its inexpensive You Tube campaign, introduced last month, would be hoppin’ with videos from frustrated commuters eager to share their traffic rage with the powers-that-be in Richmond. How many "Piece of My Commute" videos to date? Not many. Purcellville Mayor Robert Lazaro uploaded a video to the NVTA channel titled “Purcellville Traffic.” Read full entry and discussion »

Donuts on the Way and the Waterford 10K

While writing this, I’m eating a big ol’ fat donut from Shoppers Food Warehouse. However, I don’t feel too guilty about the calories because I participated Saturday in Waterford’s fourth annual Landmark Cross 10K Run-Hike-Walk. It all balances out, right? Read full entry and discussion »

Residents Question Developer's HOA Role

Lee’s Crossing is a bucolic equestrian community of 55 lots where million-dollar homes sit on 10-acre-minimum lots. These are dream homes. Residents are happy enough with their neighbors (fences make for good ones, after all), but some are not happy with the developer, Jack Merritt, who also happens to be the homeowner association board president. Run to Benefit Ashburn Girl With Cancer

Six-year-old Kailee Vance was diagnosed in October with a rare form of cancer known as rhabdomyosarcoma. Next month, a 5K race will be held to benefit the Vance family and help pay for Kailee’s medical expenses. The event will start at Newton-Lee Elementary, the school Kailee attended before her chemotherapy treatments kept her at home. “The route was planned so runners will go by Kailee’s house twice during the race. Just in case she’s not up to going outside that day, she can still look out her window and see us,” a family friend said. Read full entry and discussion »

Lansdowne Resort: The Morning After

It was eerily quiet inside the Lansdowne Resort this morning. I went to the front desk and asked to speak with a hotel official about how they were making do with the employee loss. Report: Loudoun Leads State in Horses

Loudoun remains the most populous equine county in the state, with 15,500 equines residing within its borders. While this number is down from 15,800 in 2001, I find it remarkable that, given the rate of development and loss of open land in the county in the past five years, the decrease has been so small –- that's 30 horses per square mile. Despite the influx of suburban developments, those of us living in LoCo can still claim we are living in “horse country.” Read full entry and discussion »

The Broadlands Regional Medical Center is planned to include 96 beds for medical/surgical procedures, 12 beds devoted to obstetrics, 16 intensive care beds and 40 beds for child and adolescent psychiatric patients. The 28-year-old graduated from Leesburg Christian School in 1997 and now resides in Richmond, where he is pursuing a full-time music career.
