Hot Donuts Are Coming!

I know you're just waiting for me to say something about those "Dunkin" ones (zzzz... apparently the franchise owner is never going to call us back and straighten out the Broadlands issues), but for anyone who has ever had the pleasure of a hot-dipped donut made to order, this news is even more amazing.

Beacon Hill resident and former AOL'er Troy Parkins will be opening a couple, maybe even three, Fractured Prune donut shops in Ashburn and Leesburg. With the unconfirmed rumors that the one-time Dunkin' Donuts location at Southern Walk could become a Starbucks, this bit of news is really sweet.

Don't let the "prune" name fool you; there is not really a healthy component to the offerings. The Ocean City-based home of the Prune is actually named after a local legend, Prunella Shriek, and the founders thought she had a great moniker for their unique business.

The "Sundae" with glaze, nuts and mini chips.

Our family recently discovered these concoctions that I often say is like having a "candy bar for breakfast." But then again, I did order the "Rolo" last time we were at the beach. You can see a sample menu, but what Parkins says is that he's looking forward to creating his own signature donut, like Rockville's S'Mores. There are more than a dozen glazes, a handful of toppings and everything is made to order, either from the list of specials or by creating your own mix.

"These are the best donuts ever made," said Parkins. "Even if you open a Dunkin' next to me, we'll do better."

Parkins said he first tasted the donuts about four years ago with friends in Bethany Beach and has been a fan ever since. "So many people from this area vacation out there, so they'll be familiar," he said. In fact, a colleague of his wife's specifically requested a location in River Creek.

The plan is to open the first Loudoun franchise this year and a second one next year. (You can drive to Vienna for the nearest shop if you want to taste what this is all about.) Parkins says he and a partner are seriously considering two locations, one which will be walkable, and another which is "on the way to work so people can grab and go."

Oh, and they'll offer bagel sandwiches, Seattle's Best coffee, teas and juice, too, and a dessert donut with a scoop of ice cream in the middle.

These are the absolute best donuts! They are the first stop when we get to the beach! Love it!! I'm so excited!

WOW! This is great news I had these awesome donuts at the beach. These are a lot better than Krispy Kreme and Duncan Donuts. I can't wait to hear where it goes.

These are great donuts. I just love the French Toast! There is nothing comparable to the Fractured Prune around here. We always try to make a stop there in OC.

This is great! There are no donuts shops in this area. Now I'll know where to find a cop when I need one. <grin>

When are they opening? And more specific location?

Why does his being a Beacon Hill resident matter? The fact that he lives in an overpriced McMansion makes it less likely I'll ever buy donuts from him.

Great. Donuts are such a rare item in this area, so we could use another store to sell them. Otherwise, I might have to go all the way to Giant, Safeway, Wegmans, Harris Teeter..... Just when I thought people might actually be getting healthy.
P.S. Watch it, spam4mee. ;)

mail3047723:
it matters because its a Loudoun County resident bringing donuts to Loudoun county. And this is a Loudoun county website.

Don't go hating him cause he has more money then us. Good for him being able to afford the houses in that 'hood

Yea I dont know KK is really good if you get them from the store. Duncan is good for coffee only, I would rather micro a kk then get a fresh Duncan.

I guess the cops will have somewhere other than IHOP to hang out, eh, xcop?

ed, you can always give your kids a shot of Tequila and a Corona. Throw in some Buffett to boot and they'd be the most popular kids on the bus! Wait..did you say they're only 24 months and 4? Well...never underestimate the benefits of early training!

Absolutely just what we need. People here just aren't fat enough. Some of them can still fit through doors.

cer10death,
It depends on how much of a discount they give cops. The Dunkin Donuts where I worked wouldn't take our money. Although now that I think about it, the filling in the Boston Creme did taste a little funny.

You said Creme!

Oh, there goes the carb limit. We had these at the shore and the grandkids went wild.

Where are the locations and when are the openings scheduled?????

Come to think of it, where is the one in Vienna, I can't wait!

One word:OVERRATED!

These donuts are expensive and do not taste very good at all. The donuts in the boxes at your local safeway are better!!!

Do not be fooled by the hype! Bottom-line: Dunkin Donuts are still the BEST by far!
