Emails were sent last night to AOL employee corporate accounts (not AOL email, since that was banned for office use by Falco when he became CEO), notifying them about meetings in conference rooms today. Those who did not get the email were spared the paperwork, but are wondering how jobs will be divvied up. Those who got called in knew what to expect "when the axe came down," said one staffer this morning.

Silicon Alley Insider has been running a live comment blog with updates from insiders on how things are going. Among the highlights, a t-shirt of Burns & Smithers (nicknames for Falco and COO Ron Grant around the Dulles campus) with text about how the layoff was leaked.

Then there is one from Valleywag with choice words as a layoff souvenir. They are also displaying a manifesto from a supposed ex-employee who is drinking away his or her sorrows about the layoffs.

Today, some departments are getting together at Loudoun's bars, like Dominion Brewery and Clyde's, to commiserate. Loudoun real estate agent Danilo Bogdanovic posted a notice about his friends who are among those now out of work. He said they are planning to move back to New Mexico and other places out West. "This psyche is going to trickle down" to local businesses, said Bogdanovic.

According to (now) former employees, some of the departments heavily hit include: member services, network operations centers (some said dial-up operations are decimated and the work will be divided up over remaining desks and the Bangalore center), wireless, KOL and RED, and marketing, plus operations in Columbus, Ohio and Tucson, Arizona.
