10:30 AM Sitting here live at the Dulles Town Center and talking with people as they're coming by the "booth" area. Most think that we're the mall information center (which we're blocking) and Laura Milner, our advertising/marketing person is doing her best to guide people around, but before they get away, she makes sure they know that we are a news and entertainment resource for the county.
There is a giant screen TV with amazing photos from award winning photographers Tracy Woodward and Bill Snead. We have a raffle for two of our sponsors, Hooked (a sushi place) and Fox Cinema 16 in Brambleton and people coming by to ask if they can win the 42" Vizio LCD plasma (where the photos are on display). I feel like a NASCAR driver with all those mentions... but hey, if we can't talk about our friends and our cool stuff, what else is there to do!
Beverly from Patowmack Farm restaurant came by to say hi. They're in Lovettsville and she's enticing us with talk of their new menu, which includes antelope!
11 AM Remember the Plane Pull story? Kevin Lemmon from Symantec was a leader for one of the teams and he was just here to tell us that they made it through the sweltering heat of the day without major embarrasment -- the team pulled in about 9 seconds!
Lemmon says he's also a fan of the political comments, as is another man who came by but didn't want to be identified. They say they're holding back from making comments themselves, but we can always use some additional voices.
11:15 AM While we have a bit of a lull here, thought I'd mention last night's event in Leesburg. We went out to First Friday and it was worth every minute. The stores that stayed open had all kinds of food and art enticements to draw people in, and I definitely got a much better look at what the downtown area had to offer than I do when I'm driving by on my way to a singular destination.
If you've been around the local band scene for the last twenty years, you may have heard of Emmet Swimming (http://www.emmetswimming.com/). Band member Todd Watts was with his wife Jill and children at Fireworks pizza where we caught up with them. They recently moved to Leesburg and are loving the lifestyle of being able to walk around and have cool places to hang out.
While there, we talked with a former Dominon Brewing staff person who confirmed some rumors we've heard -- that yes, there is only one of the original brewers left of the old staff. And word is that most of the bartenders and waitstaff left too. Our "Going out Guru" Fritz Hahn is working on an upcoming story about what beers Dominon will stop producing and what will be left of local favorites.
Over at the Courthouse, "Aurora's Traveling Players" put on a hilarious series of short plays that had children and adults laughing out loud, especially the swordfights and tripping stunts. Too bad it was so dark... the actors expressions were priceless.
Inside the courthouse, the county had artifacts on display to celebrate the 250th anniversary. The penmanship was outstanding -- though it would be interesting to see if students today could read 200-year old cursive. It is like art. The county was also selling White House style ornaments to commemorate the 250 years, so if you are interested in them, you'll have to head to Leesburg. Unfortunately, the ladies at the table said, they are not selling online.
11:30 Thanks to Potomac Falls students Chris and Joshua for coming by with their parents. They like that we're doing more sports coverage, but the boys, who were wearing their school shirts, asked for us to give more coverage to their sports.
Chris, a sophomore, would like to see wrestling, and Joshua, a junior, said we need to have more cross-country and track coverage.
11:50 Ted and Kelly McLaughlan from DullesSouthOnline.com stopped by to say hi with their kids. Ted attended the recent political debate at Stone Bridge and said he thought it was great and even took some time to comment. If you want to know more about your local candidates, go to http://loudounextra.washingtonpost.com/elections/ where each candidate has a page and has answered questions from our reporters.
12:15 Great to meet so many of you in person, and especially to meet people who are new to Loudoun. If there is something going on that you want us to know about, click on the link in the byline above or add a comment in any of the relevant stories.
Thanks to everyone who came by -- have a great weekend!
