A Bad Night for Republicans

Tammi Marcoullier at 12:15 a.m., November 7, 2007 (35 comments)

Steven J. Snow (Dulles) and Mike Firetti (Chairman seat), Republican candidates for the county Board of Supervisors, didn't officially concede losses, but their party at The Original Steakhouse in Broadlands quietly began to wind down around 9:45 and was over just after 10 p.m. Tuesday night.

Earlier in the evening, the candidates mingled with a group of approximately 75 supporters and were optimistic about what they had heard from residents they talked to at the polls. "We ran a great campaign and worked hard," said Snow, who added that people he talked to "didn't like the negativity from the other guy."

Firetti was jubilant and confident that he had gotten the right message out to voters. "In the event we do lose, we have exposed Scott York to the public," said Firetti, referring to supervisor chairman York's dealings with the Cameron Chase development. "If it helps keep him on the straight and narrow then I've done my job," said Firetti.

It was a pivotal night for Snow, an incumbent who had campaigned on his accomplishments of managing growth through deals with developers to bring amenities to Dulles South. "I don't think the opposition understands the dynamics -- you can't slow growth, you can manage it," he said.

Snow's opponent, and the ultimate victor, Stevens Miller, campaigned on what many said was the "I'm not Steve Snow" platform. Miller said that he wouldn't be making decisions with developers in his pocket.

At O'Faolain's in Sterling, Miller and other Democratic candidates kept their party going late into the night full of adrenaline and excitement. York and Andrea McGimsey (the challenger for Potomac) showed strong leads in the hotly contested races against Firetti and Bruce Tulloch (incumbent Potomac), respectively.

Didn't they party on the Titanic long after they struck the iceberg??? Just saying...

Wait! This just occurred to me...

Listen???? Hear that??? Not a peep from Sally or Barbara!

If a candidate falls in the election...does it make a sound????

Guess not...

<giggling at the pith! I just crack myself up sometimes.>

"Snow's opponent, and the ultimate victor, Stevens Miller, campaigned on what many said was the "I'm not Steve Snow" platform. "

Frankly, the Dems could have ran a potted plant against Snow and won. Mr. Snow never understood no-one in Dulles wants to extend Chantilly out to Aldie.

Steve Snow lost. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Whew, let me catch my breath. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Now if we can only get Firetti to pick up all of his signs from the right-of-way of every road in the county, even though they shouldn't have been there in the first place.

xcop...how do you really feel???

Posted by cer10death (anonymous) on November 7, 2007 at 8:50 a.m. (Suggest removal)

There are approximately 50 projects that the lame duck BOS will consider during these next two months. Do the losing supervisors (along with their respective planning commission members) go ahead and approve every development as a final "gift" to the citizens of Loudoun for voting them out? If so, the impact will be felt for more than four years.

hahaha - I totally agree w/ xcop about Firetti's signs. Everyone else seems to have at least has made an attempt to get most of them, but his are still everywhere.

Well the pendulum has swung again. I think the challenge now is to come together and get things done to address the growth related problems and the upcoming wave of new developments from the ousted BOS.

Hope we don't have a slew of lame duck development approvals.

Not to totally beat a dead horse, but here are two other examples of Snow’s ridiculous behavior on Election Day (not counting his arguing with voters in front of polling places which has been reported elsewhere)

1) Snow stood in front of a public school polling place slapping students on the back…..with Vote Snow stickers placed unknowingly on their backs.

2) When the polls closed, other candidates or staff were removing their signage so the school custodial staff would not have to. When Snow personally was asked to do the same, he stormed off without lifting a finger.

While I am thrilled with the results, I am also concerned that this lame duck board will do all it can to reward its backers during what is left of their terms. We all need to continue watching the STDS like hawks. I know for a fact there are numerous Dulles South density packing rezoning requests pending at the PC and/or BOS.

Congratulations to the winners. Unfortunately, you now have the dirty job of cleaning out the stables where the horses-patoots left quite a mess. This will be a herculean task that requires the continued active involvement of not just elected officials but constituents as well

This Republican was sick of greed, questionable ethics, and outright arrogance exhibited by my party members. The behavior of the Loudoun BOS has been downright embarrassing for four years! Time for a change, until the party I love can get its act together, and start paying attention to the people they were elected to serve, instead of their personal bank accounts!

Delguadio is still around. So there.

Hey Firetti!!!!
Don't let the door hit you in the as* on your way back to Delaware!!!!!
Oh wait...you'll be back in January to answer charges about how you financed your campaign.
See you then!

Delgaudio won by 214 votes, that is hardly a breathtaking endorsement. I say that leaves 1 part of Sterling who will continue to be humiliated by him, 1 part who reverently supports him, and 1 part (the larger of the three apparently) that just doesn’t even care enough either way to go out and vote.
Isn't Delguadio still under investigation anyway? We never did see that FBI letter clearing him. Is there a way to get him out depending upon the results, not that he can do jack now. I agree with tconway, we need to watch what this board does on its way out.

I do want the services and dining/shopping choices that Ashburn has in Dulles. I am disappointed that the people of Steve Snow's district are satisfied with the choices we have. Thank you Steve for getting us HomeDepot, Lowes, Target, and all the new dining and shopping that are already in progress. To the "slow growth" hermits, you have just forced the development to WV where the commuters will still clog up traffic racing through Loudoun County to the jobs in FAIRFAX COUNTY and where civilization starts without paying one dime in taxes to maintain the roads.

kmccorma, your viewpoint is absolutely contradicted by facts and was soundly trounced at the polls. Steve Snow was one of the most obnoxious politicians I've ever seen, and he got exactly what he deserved.

I voted for the Loudoun sheriff substations for the purpose of enhanced crime fighting. I darn well hope I didn't just vote for more speeding tickets!

lunavalle27 -- He did get re-elected, but the scenario is the second best we could have hoped for -- and in some ways destined to be far more entertaining. We now get to watch him squirm -- possibly his karma paying him back? -- ranting and raving, getting NOTHING done with his extremist majority of ONE. That will almost be worth the price of admission.

Stephen, we should make a point of attending the first Board meeting together. Do they allow popcorn in the Board room?

kmccorma, while I don't disagree with you about having some more services in our area, those services were and are already on the way anyway due to the existing growth in our area (see all the new stuff going in around the South Riding Giant and in Stone Ridge as two examples - 1.5M ft of retail space). However we don't need 2 MILLION additional square feet of retail (approved) and 30K+ more homes (thankfully rejected) to go with it. Especially when we have to choke all that traffic down just to get a couple more lanes on Route 50? Doesn't make any sense. And frankly I reject the whole WV argument as well as a red herring. I have yet to meet anyone moving into our area or upgrading who would seriously consider moving to WV. While there may be a few that do, the vast majority already settle in the 10's of thousands of homes we already have available and/or approved here - we sure don't need people like Snow adding many thousands more. THAT'S where the real traffic comes from, not WV scare tactics. Thankfully the residents in Loudoun saw through Snow's FUD and embarrassing behavior and gave him the boot.

No, that remaining third is probably made up of Sterling residents ineligible to vote. Draw your own conclusions.

While I consider Mr. ED to be rather slimy, I'm hoping we will still see some form of enforcement of residential rules in Sterling Park, and he seems to be the only person on the new BoS willing to talk about it.

Sally........have you moved out of the county yet? That's right you can't, too much development has flooded the market and you can't sell your house. Enjoy the ride Sally.

Ouch, sticksandstones!!!
Don't expect to see Sally or Babs for awhile. Suzanne Volpe herself was stillreeling from the news last night.
Van Meter may actually put a hit on Soprano Boy after his performance yesterday...er...lack of performance.

honcho, xcop, Tom, Eric, et al.:
I'm really looking forward to some news from the 10th District! I suspect we'll be hearing that call for volunteers to start The New LCRC any day now.
Are y'all ready for this?

Posted by stephen (anonymous) on November 7, 2007 at 1:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Sorry, politics isn't for me. I actually think that it is wrong to accept kickbacks (not saying that any our BoS members would do such a thing). Besides, it's much more fun to point out things that other people are doing, like not winning re-election, STEVE SNOW!! Anyways, I don't think the public is ready for my 'Do you like donuts?' strategy. The truth hurts don't it. (It's more of an audio joke.)

That push for interested members is moving forward right now. Please contact me if you are interested in participating in the rebuilding of the Republican Party by attending the Mass Meeting in March. If you are interested in replacing the abuse by the current executive committee members with sane and rational representation that would make every reasonable republican proud, we need you!!! I'm also expecting a defection from the failed policies of the existing LCRC that will come and stand with us. We are glad to embrace them and all take the party to a cleaner and more ethical place.

I'd like to get your reaction on that...

I bet I know the soundtrack at the Original Steakhouse the other night. Beck - Loser. 3 Doors Down - Loser. Motorhead - Loser. Cracker - Loser. Devo - Whip It.

It probably was a big chuckle feast, as the owner of the Original Steakhouse gave $16,000 to the Firetti campaign. That's right read again, a restaurateur gave $16,000 to a loser.

Then I suppose it might have been better called an up-chuckle fest.
