Poll View: Voters Talk & Tally

Tammi Marcoullier at 3:04 p.m., November 6, 2007 (13 comments)

By noon today, thousands of voters across the county had already weighed in for candidates on the board of supervisors, sheriff, school board, treasurer, clerk and commonwealth attorney races.

Though turnout has reportedly been light at Freedom High School with about 200 voters, Broad Run High School had around 600 voters, and Little River Elementary had 726 voters come through by noon today. A voter in the Catoctin District said that he was about 300th in line when he went to the polls around 11 a.m. at Waterford Elementary School.

Correspondent Val Cavalheri in South Riding talked with people in the Dulles South area, asking them if there is a specific reason or issue that brought them out to vote. C.G. Flinchum of Chantilly said he is concerned about the environment and would like to see some change. "I'm urging everyone I know to come out and vote," he said.

Voter Chris Wolf of South Riding said he is concerned about transportation, particularly Rt. 50, and the decline of property values and what this will do to his taxes.

When State House of Representative District 67 candidate C. Chuck Caputo (D) arrived at Little River, "people crowded around him like he was a rock star," said Cavalheri. The campaign volunteers for all candidates at that location said that the atmosphere has been optimistic and people are happily accepting the sample ballots.

Josh McKnight, a volunteer for incumbent Steve Snow (R) who is in a hotly contested race with Stevens Miller (D) for the Dulles District Board of Supervisor seat, said that the campaign is feeling very positive and that people are showing up to support him.

"I'm doing my part, I come out every year to vote," said Lisa Presgrave who said she is "Hoping that Loudoun continues to grow, so I voted 'yes' on everything."

In Lansdowne, a voter I talked with said that Broad Run school board candidate Tag Greason supporters are "out in full force" -- he's got an uphill battle to climb as a write-in candidate against incumbent Bob Ohneiser. Phyllis Randall was seen greeting people at Belmont Ridge Middle School this morning, but no Lori Waters at the time.

Turn out was strong this morning, around 10:30 a.m. at Belmont Ridge Middle School. "I live in the same voting district as Leisure World. I may have been one of the youngest people at the polling place," said one voter who actually had to wait in a short line. "Is voting going to die off with our WW II generation?"

So far, no reports of long lines in any of the districts, but that could change as voters get closer to the polls closing at 7 p.m. Within minutes of the polls closing, you will likely find candidates and supporters at one of many "victory parties" across the county.

A few we've heard about include, Firetti and Snow at The Original Steakhouse in Broadlands (though insiders are not sure what Snow's plans are for public interacton); Miller, David Poisson and Mark Herring at O'Faolain's in Sterling, and Scott York at Tuscarora Mill in Leesburg. Miller may also have a group at Glory Days on Rt. 50. The Republican party will be at the Holiday Inn Leesburg.

I think I'll have a victory party of my own! I'm inviting Tammi, xcop, ed, stiks, qoewoerijoe (whatever that screen name is)!

I'm celebrating that this election season is over and hopefully we'll all go on with our seemingly pointless lives instead of character assassination of public figures on a web site for the sake of advancing our petty little political agendas.

For one second, I hope that some of you will take stock on just how petty this has all been. In a day or two, none of what you posted...screamed about...cussed about...will matter one iota. Your passion will fade away like the indigo dye in your blue jeans. Having your boy or girl in the district seat means exactly what? You get to rub elbows with the goobersmoochers? So what? I work for one of the world's richest men...my desk is 50 feet from his office door. We know each other by first name. That doesn't make me the richest man nor does it make me anything but his employee. The same applies to you if your candidate wins the seat. Doesn't make you the winner. Just makes you their "employee". From my chair, these public officials are MY employee...they work for ME! And you and all of us...

But you'd never know that based on how some of you carry on here.

xcop...the first round of Gatorade is on me!

Days like yesterday are why I love America. We can vote the bums out if we want to, and yesterday Loudoun County did exactly that!

Sorry, Chris... but that explains EXACTLY why you have no grasp of the local reality.
These folks have more impact on your daily life than even the President. They will make decisions that will actually determine your tax rate, your commute and your children's plight. Get with the program and actually educate yourself regarding what they can or cannot do to your quality of life with one vote. That is why it is of the utmost importance to assure that the best man/woman is offered the opportunity to serve in the capacity, and no one less qualified is.
Taxes have climbed 60% and more under this BOS, and the new members will now attempt to change the failed policies and greed in order to turn those increases around.
You chose to "cop out" instead of use your intellect.
