Big Night Out with Boxer Jimmy Lange

Jimmy Lange, a championship boxer who calls Leesburg home, will be making a special appearance for boxing fans Saturday night for a Fight Against Cancer event.

Lange, the WBC Continental Americas super welterweight champion, will give guests a rare, behind-the-scenes look at his last match, which took place May 12 at the Patriot Center. Michael Whalen, who will host the fundraiser at his house, said "it was an action-packed win" that captured the championship belt.

The fight will be replayed with Lange sitting among fans to answer questions before and after each round. "If you are curious about what words of wisdom world-renowned trainer Angelo Dundee had for Jimmy between rounds, this is your chance to learn," said Whalen.

The event is free, but limited to 100 participants. There will be a corresponding silent auction, photos, and autograph session. All proceeds from the night will benefit 2-year old Taylor Love, who is being treated for stage four neuroblastoma cancer.

Lange, a father of twin 4-year-old boys and a 2-year-old girl, has known Taylor's mom, Aimee, for about 10 years and wanted to do something to help the family. "I can't fathom how difficult this is for the family. If there is anything I can do to contribute at all, then I will," said Lange. You can read more about Taylor's story at www.carepages.com at the page "Taylorgram."

Whalen said the auction is open now for those who want to bid remotely. The match replay will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Among the auction items, tickets to the Redskins-Dallas game, a year-long membership to Sport & Health, signed boxing gloves, a Capitals hockey stick signed by the entire team, and sixth-row Orioles game tickets.

The Taylor Love event was a great success. The Love Family, including the guest of honor -- Taylor -- was there. You would never know that Taylor is in the fight of her life against that cancer. She was singing, dancing, elbowing her brothers, eating ice cream -- you name it, she was doing it all. The fight viewing was a huge hit among the Jimmy Lange fans. Attendees were able to ask Jimmy questions during the fight -- great questions were asked and Jimmy didn't disappoint with his answers. Plus the silent auction results were strong. The end of the night was my favorite. I am a big guy with a bald head and little kids tend to shy away from me. During the night, Taylor interacted with me a bit but from a distance. As the Love Family was leaving, Taylor turned to me and gave me a hug and a delicate kiss on the cheek -- I thought I was in heaven -- she really is a little angel. Tammi,
Your coverage of the Love family's ordeal has been terrific. I hope you will encourage the National Desk to cover the cross-country ride that Michael and four other fathers are taking to raise funds and awareness. Incredibly, help is available for these children, but funding of $3-5 million is needed. More information is available at www.lonliestroad.org
