Sharing Moms' Music Secrets

Tammi Marcoullier at 12:00 p.m., August 1, 2007 (3 comments)

After listening to the Wiggles' "Big Red Car" a hundred times, many parents of toddlers and pre-schoolers find themselves wanting to ban syrupy children's music from their minivans altogether. Thankfully we have friends and neighborhood bloggers like Loudoun Proud to help find solutions to these mentally taxing problems.

Today the suburban blogger writes about kids' music that parents can not only tolerate, but enjoy. Check out the list of suggestions, from the "Happy Feet" soundtrack to Laurie Berkner, and chime in with your own favorites.

If you would rather have your kids making music, take note of the local upsurge we're seeing in music education programs for the pre-school set too.

A new Suzuki violin school opened in Ashburn this summer. The Suzuki style of teaching music is different than traditional music lessons because instructors begin working with children as young as three years old and teach music as a language of immersion in sound and expression. You can read about the new school in the Times-Mirror and Ashburn Today stories.

And then there are numerous Music Together programs throughout the county. One of the most popular teachers, Maddy O'Neill-Dean, led a class at the Ashburn MOMS Club July meeting, where upwards of 40 children and their mothers sang, danced and played instruments. Ms. Maddy has some students that began their music lessons as infants, but it isn't teaching the little ones that is difficult. She is a master at managing the parents who like to chat and distract from the lessons.

For older children and adults, A&A Music opened two locations this year, one in Ashburn Village and the other in Brambleton. Andy Nguyen, the school of music director, has been teaching in Loudoun since 1994, but is also known to many neighborhood moms because his wife, Hien, is a popular family hairdresser.

What do you think about music for children today?

Maddy from Music Together has come to our restaurant in Ashburn and she puts on a truly awesome performance. I have attended her classes as well with my daughter and she really knows music and knows how to get children to love music.
