America’s Polo Cup: Complaints Runneth Over?

The CW channel in the metro area, WDCW-TV, will be airing "Land Rover America's Polo Cup--Where the Elite Meet" on Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The show, hosted by Paul Wharton, of MTV and VH1 fame, will feature highlights from Friday night's exclusive gala and fashion show, and footage from Saturday's polo event at Morven Park. Firefighters Serve Breakfast to Ashburn Residents

Feds Move to Block Inova Purchase

The Federal Trade Commission announced today that it is moving forward to block Inova’s purchase of Prince William Health System because the acquisition would reduce competition of hospital services in Northern Virginia. Read more of this post »

Loudoun Tourism on Hallowed Ground

Signal Delays, Greenway Pays and (Grrrr) Route 7 Backups

All tolls collected by the Dulles Greenway on May 15 will be donated to area charities, there are delays in getting traffic lights at Shellhorn Road and Ashburn Village Parkway, and more backups are in store along a stretch of Route 7. Read more of this post »

Vandals Destroy $5,600 Concert Sign

Sometime over the weekend a large banner promoting the Loudoun Summer Music Fest was vandalized. The sign, which was visible to traffic on Route 7 near Belmont Country Club where the outdoor concerts take place, was estimated at $5,600. Read more of this post »

LoCo Fees for Fido and Fluffy

Our cat, Ruby, is now 16 years old. I pulled up one of Ruby’s vet bills from Pender Veterinary Clinic in Fairfax dated Jan. 21, 1995. Total: $29.75. For giggles, I called Ruby’s clinic in Ashburn to see what they currently charge for similar services. Total: $71.20. More interesting is the regional price variance in veterinary care. Tick, Tick, Tick: Lyme Disease in Loudoun

Susie Dorsch, 39, of Ashburn, just finished six weeks of intravenous antibiotic treatments to combat Lyme disease. The mother of four continues to suffer from aches, fatigue and a low-grade fever. There were 215 cases of Lyme disease reported in the county during the last six months of 2007, and Loudoun’s rate of Lyme disease is about 20 times greater than that of the Virginia average. Traffic Troubles? So Far, Purcellville Shows Its Woes

Now that NVTA’s bank account is kaput, the authority was hoping that its inexpensive You Tube campaign, introduced last month, would be hoppin’ with videos from frustrated commuters eager to share their traffic rage with the powers-that-be in Richmond. How many "Piece of My Commute" videos to date? Not many. Purcellville Mayor Robert Lazaro uploaded a video to the NVTA channel titled “Purcellville Traffic.” Read more of this post »

LCPS Teacher Dies In Motorcycle Crash

In the early hours of Saturday, April 19, a Loudoun County Public School teacher and a Maryland man were killed when the motorcycle they were riding veered off a Lusby, Md., road and hit a tree. Amanda M. Lorenzo taught third grade at Potowmack Elementary School in Sterling. This was her first year teaching in Loudoun. Read more of this post »

Leaders Drum Up Business in 'Sister County'

Loudoun County Chairman Scott K. York (I-At Large) and a contingency of county representatives returned this week from a business trip to Europe. Residents Question Developer's HOA Role

Lee’s Crossing is a bucolic equestrian community of 55 lots where million-dollar homes sit on 10-acre-minimum lots. These are dream homes. Residents are happy enough with their neighbors (fences make for good ones, after all), but some are not happy with the developer, Jack Merritt, who also happens to be the homeowner association board president. Bus Gives Kids a New Set of Wheels

The Loudoun Youth Initiative dedicated a bus this week that will be available to transport kids to organized activities around the county. The LYI bus will transport kids to activities at area teen centers, movie theaters, shopping malls, and organized programs through the Boys and Girls Clubs of Loudoun, the YMCA and Loudoun County Public Schools. NVTA Grantor's Tax Refund Processing Begins

The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority has refunded nearly all $12 million in taxes and fees it collected during the first quarter of the year to the counties that collected them. A bulk of the money it collected came from a grantor's tax paid by sellers at the time of land and home settlements. Read more of this post »
