Broad Run traveled to Sherando on Monday afternoon for their AA Region II first round matchup and lost by a count of 7-2. They fell behind 5-0 in the third inning on Northwestern District Player of the Year Nick Merchant's two-run home run and were forced to play catchup the rest of the way.
The Spartans cut the deficit to 5-1 on Nick Richardson's RBI single to right, but the Warriors tacked on two more to push their lead to 7-1. Sherando chased Broad Run starter Chase Warren with an early onslaught of hits, but sophomore Taylor Clarke came in and only gave up two runs in 3 1/3 innings of relief work.
Broad Run finishes its season with a 12-10 record overall, its sixth consecutive winning season. Their game against Sherando also marked the third straight year the Spartans have reached regional play. They finished third in the Dulles District regular season and were runners-up to Potomac Falls in the league tournament.
Pat Cassidy's group only loses three seniors from the roster, but all are key players. Outfielder Patrick Murphy, first baseman Andrew Hathaway and shortstop Chris Jessop have anchored the lineup and contributed defensively as well as in the dugout.
