Monday (Afternoon) QB: District Championship Edition

Matt Brooks at 3:57 p.m., May 4, 2009

Curious who's dominating the Dulles District spring sports landscape? I'll give you a hint. Their names starts with a 'Spar' and ends with a 'tans.'

Yup, those Broad Run Spartans are doing it again this spring season, but with even more dominance than we saw a year ago when the girls' soccer and softball teams rolled unbeaten to state titles. Here's the latest on who's already sewn up their district crowns and who has work left to do. The names might seem a bit redundant, but that just goes to show how strong the Spartans have been across the board this season. Consider this: Broad Run's current senior class has never failed to win a Dulles District softball, boys' lacrosse and girls' lacrosse regular season championship. Not once in four years. Pretty hard to believe, huh? Kudos Potomac Falls baseball and County girls' tennis for preventing a complete Broad Run sweep.

Baseball: Potomac Falls (13-3, 11-0) - Clinched title on May 1
A year ago the Panthers battled to the very end with Broad Run, holding down first place early in the season after a win over the Spartans but eventually losing out to the reigning district champs and settling for runner-up in both the regular season and district tournament. This year, propelled by a stellar starting staff and a powerful offense, the Panthers took care of business early on and locked up the league title on the first day of May. This team is built for the postseason and if they're healthy, they could put together the best state tournament run we've seen from a Loudoun baseball team in some time. If you want to see what I thought about them back in March, check out my From the Notebook entry from their 10-0 win over Loudoun County.

The Spartans clinched at least a share of the regular season title for the fourth straight season with Thursday's win over Heritage. Thanks to their two closest competitors in the district - George Mason and Dominion - even if Broad Run loses their final game, they'll still own the top seed heading into the Dulles District tournament as well as the automatic berth into the regional playoffs. A year ago, the Spartans were forced to share the crown when they finished in a three-way tie with the Pride and the Mustangs. A win over Potomac Falls in their season finale (originally scheduled for tonight but postponed to later this week) would allow them to enjoy sole possession of that distinction. The Spartans have lost just once during the district regular season during their four year reign. And they've only failed to go on and win the district tournament championship one time as well. Check out Dan Sousa's recap of their victory over Heritage along with the team's record over the past four years here.

Girls' Lacrosse: Broad Run (8-3, 7-0)
The Lady Spartans matched their male counterparts with a victory over the Pride on Thursday night that sealed their fourth straight district title (I'm sensing a theme here...). With a one game lead over second place Loudoun County (6-1), a Spartans' loss to Potomac Falls in their season finale would force a shared league crown but with Broad Run owning the tiebreaker, they would still earn the regional berth and the top seed for the district tourney.

Boys' Soccer: Broad Run (9-4, 8-3)
The picture is not quite clear here as we head into the final few games of the season. Broad Run currently sits atop the table, but not by much. After a 2-1 victory over Loudoun County on Friday, the Spartans have a two-point cushion over Park View, whom they face tomorrow night. Two points behind Park View sits the Raiders. The winner of the Broad Run-Park View game will be in the driver's seat for the final two games of the district season, but anything is possible. Should Park View win, they'll have a slim one-point advantage over Broad Run and games against Briar Woods and Freedom to close. A Broad Run win puts them five points clear of Park View with Potomac Falls and Dominion, fourth and fifth in the district, respectively left on the schedule. And again, with Loudoun County sitting just behind, a tie could keep the Raiders right in the running for the title going into the final game of the regular season. Don't take your eyes away from this race folks. Check out the gamer from Broad Run and Loudoun County's No. 1 vs. No. 2 game on Friday.

Girls' Soccer: Broad Run (12-0-1, 10-0-1)
Broad Run has not surprisingly all but locked up another Dulles District title, cruising through its schedule with the only "blemish" a 0-0 tie against Loudoun County on March 31. The defending Virginia AA state champions were coming off of a perfect 24-0 season and this year have continued to distance themselves from the pack. The Spartans have outscored opponents 48-3 this year and with three games remaining on the district schedule are currently eight points clear of their nearest competitor in the district standings. Technically, if the Spartans (31 pts) lost their final three and Heritage (23 pts) won its final three, the Pride would win the title by one point, 32 points to 31 points. But a Spartans win tomorrow, or either of the two games beyond that, would secure the Spartans the championship banner.

Softball: Broad Run (13-2, 11-0)
With three games to go, the defending state champs are three games up on Potomac Falls and Briar Woods (both 8-3). A loss by either the Falcons or the Panthers - who the Spartans are scheduled to play on Friday - would give Broad Run its fourth straight district title. Potomac Falls and Briar Woods also face off in both team's season finale on May 12th in what will likely be a battle for second place and the No. 2 seed in the district tourney. The Panthers won the first meeting between the two in a 1-0 pitcher's duel. Although they haven't been perfect this year - any other team would be thrilled with a two-loss season - the Spartans should wrap up the title within the week and have to be considered a favorite to reach the state tournament for a run at their third straight championship.

Boys' Tennis: Broad Run (12-0, 12-0) - Clinched title on April 30
For the first time since 1996, the Spartan boys are Dulles District champions. Not only did they sweep the two-time defending champs this season, but they've turned an 8-8 program a year ago into a perfect 12-0 team in 2009. With just two seniors in the top six and a sophomore holding things down at No. 1, the Spartans are rolling into the postseason for the first time in a long time. They haven't faced a 5-4 match thus far, and have concerns about their No. 3 doubles pairing when they are finally forced to play a tight match, but to this point, they've been strong from top to bottom. Only Freedom and Potomac Falls stand between them and an undefeated regular season. For the full details of the Spartans run to the district title, check out my feature on them and the undefeated Loudoun Valley Vikings.

Girls' Tennis: Loudoun County (13-0)
The Raiders locked this one up nice and early will look complete a perfect regular season in their district finale this week. Their lone loss on the season came in a non-district match against Jefferson (WVa) on the very same Saturday that the Cougars handed Loudoun Valley its lone loss on the year. Right now it looks like Broad Run, Dominion and Briar Woods will round out the district tournament field later this week.

Which one of these teams did you least expect to be here when the season started? Let us know what you think!
