Because we had to wait out the rain, Championship Saturday turned into Semifinal Saturday as several Loudoun teams took the fields in hopes of keeping their state championship dreams alive. And for the most part, it was a successful day, particularly for Broad Run, Potomac Falls and Loudoun Valley.
Broad Run girls' soccer remained on track for its second consecutive AA title after dispatching Courtland, 2-0. Potomac Falls boys' soccer returned to the AA final for the first time since 2006 by beating Broad Run, 5-0, in an all-Loudoun state semifinal. Broad Run softball kept its dreams of a third consecutive state title with a 2-0 victory over Orange. Meantime, up at Westfield, Loudoun Valley softball advanced to the AAA state final by knocking off South County, 2-0, to reach its first final since 2005, when it was still a AA school.
Others saw their seasons come to an end. Potomac Falls baseball fell behind early and never quite recovered, falling 3-0 to Poquoson. Loudoun Valley's Kiersten Pappas reached the Virginia AAA finals for singles and doubles, but lost both despite playing for more than six hours on Saturday.
So the schedule for Sunday is as follows:
1 p.m. -- Broad Run vs. Tunstall softball final at Radford
2 p.m. -- Broad Run vs. Hidden Valley girls' soccer final at Radford
4 p.m. -- Potomac Falls vs. Blacksburg boys' soccer final at Radford
4 p.m. -- Loudoun Valley vs. Great Bridge softball at Westfield HS
On a side note, when we scheduled our All-Extra photo shoot for Sunday afternoon, we had no idea certain players would still be playing for a title on that day. So to those of you still down at Radford: no worries and no hard feelings. It was all circumstances beyond everyone's control, namely the rain.
And with that, we put a lid on Super Saturday. But we'll be back with more scoring updates all day Sunday from Radford and Westfield. Best of luck to all the teams!
