Recruiting Notes

With a snow day upon us, I thought I'd give you guys some recruiting tidbits and then delve more deeply into updating you guys on the recruitment of one of the area's top players, Loudoun County TE-LB Chase Williams.

-- Stone Bridge senior WR-DB Nick Sheehan was offered a preferred walk-on at Virginia Tech as a defensive back, Coach Mickey Thompson confirmed to LoudounPrepSports.com. Sheehan joins offensive lineman Matt Custer as Loudoun Valley transfers to receive walk-on offers after one year with Stone Bridge. Custer received an offer as a preferred walk-on from Maryland. Other seniors to commit from Stone Bridge this year include Brian Slay (N.C. State), Patrick Thompson, Zack Thompson and Mike Olson (Wake Forest), David Wang (Virginia Tech), Daniel Allen (JMU) and Trevor Springman (William & Mary).

UPDATE: Just got off the phone with Mickey Thompson and he confirmed that Sheehan has accepted the offer from Virginia Tech as a preferred walk-on.

-- In a short talk with Briar Woods Coach Charlie Pierce this winter, I learned several players are getting looks at some Division I-AA, Division II and Division III schools, while some Falcons are garnering D-I attention. One name I confirmed was WR-DB Jeremy Gray, who has been linked to Colorado State and North Texas. Pierce said there was interest there from those schools. Gray's father, Jerry Gray, is a secondary coach with the Washington Redskins.

-- I saw Broad Run QB-DB Chris Jessop at the Broad Run basketball doubleheader the other night. Jessop recently got over a bout with pneumonia, and lost 18 pounds in the process. Jessop told me he had decided to head down to play baseball at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. From a brief conversation with someone close to the Broad Run football program, I can also confirm that several juniors are getting looks from D-I programs, while some of the seniors on the team are also looking at playing football at the next level. As soon as I hear anything official from the state champions, it will be posted here.

-- We'll also be keeping our ears open about the Heritage and Freedom jobs. Announcements are expected soon on both of those openings, and we'll let you know once we know. There are plenty of rumors out there, but we will not speculate.

We had a comment on the blog not too long ago asking if we had heard anything about Loudoun County standout TE-LB Chase Williams receiving an early offer from Missouri. I did some reporting and can tell you that while Williams has not received an offer yet, he is drawing plenty of interest from the school.

Williams was initially planning on attending Missouri's junior day this weekend, but has instead opted to stay close to home and will be attending Maryland's junior day instead, his brother Blake Williams told me.

Blake Williams and his father, Gregg Williams, were both hired by the New Orleans Saints recently, but Blake told me that he is "99 percent sure" Chase will be back in Loudoun County and that something drastic would have to happen for Williams to move to Louisiana.

In addition, Chase is expecting an in-school visit on Wednesday from the head coach and recruiting coordinator of a major local ACC program, and it could be that Williams will receive an early offer at that time.

To date, the only offer he has received is from New Mexico State, where newly hired head coach DeWayne Walker has promised Williams plenty of playing time as a freshman. Walker formerly worked on Gregg Williams' staff with the Washington Redskins.

Williams has a list of favorites, though that list is expected to change. Virginia Tech, Missouri and Miami are all at the top of the list, though he has yet to really delve deep into the recruiting process with Maryland, Penn State, Michigan, Alabama and Southern Cal – all of whom have reached out to Williams recently. Those programs have been turning on the heat and Williams is planning to schedule some unofficial visits for later this spring. Williams did take recruiting trips to Penn State and Virginia Tech. He was in attendance at the VT-Virginia game and had a strong impression of the Blacksburg school.

Other schools showing interest in the form of letters, phone calls and emails include Virginia, Duke, North Carolina, LSU, Florida, Georgia, Boise State, Nebraska, Clemson, Stanford, Princeton, UCLA, Colorado, Boston College and South Carolina.

There is no doubt Williams has become one of the top recruits in the area, perhaps in the country, and already has offers to attend nationwide passing camps for Scout.com's top recruits.

He is being recruited as an athlete because of his ability to play both linebacker and tight end. He was an honorable mention All-Met linebacker, but was up for consideration as a tight end as well. And with his frame and athleticism and the possibility of filling out even more, Williams may be best suited on the offensive side of the ball, where he looked like a natural pass catcher and playmaker. Williams told me when I interviewed him for a feature story last year that he preferred the defensive side of the ball, however.

This is great guys. You should replace the highly overrated Thursday Throwdown with Recruiting Thursdays or something. Dewayne Walker is the father of former Stone Bridge standout wide receiver and current Oregon State freshman Kevan Walker. Also, I know you mentioned BRHS juniors were getting looks but what about Flemming specifically? Also, it seems like Owens from PFHS might get some looks. Recruiting is my kryptonite, but keep it coming.

Dexter Strong, a Stone Bridge senior lineman, is taking his official visit to William & Mary this weekend, with hopes of securing an offer.
