It was a busy weekend of basketball action as Loudoun's teams returned from exams and the holiday and hit the hardwood running. Dominion and Broad Run got back on track and Loudoun County stayed hot on the boys' side while Freedom continued to set the pace for the girls. The best games of the weekend were Broad Run and Briar Woods girls (a late three-pointer was the difference) and an overtime thriller between the County and Park View boys on Saturday. Let's roll the video tape... Read full entry and discussion »

Welcome back to the Top 5 Basketball Power Poll. We hope you all enjoyed the festivities this weekend, whether that meant braving the cold with the millions on the mall or sitting at home and watching on the tele. Read full entry and discussion »
The big news going into the weekend was the surprising upset at Dominion, where a Briar Woods team that only recently picked up the first district win in school history knocked off the first place Titans in Sterling. Dominion was coming off an impressive 26-point win over Broad Run, making the Falcons' upset victory even more surprising. Read full entry and discussion »

There's a new No. 1 in this week's Power Poll and we had plenty of movement in the girls' ranks. See who stepped it up in a busy week in district play and who will be spending the exam break regrouping for the second half of league play. Don't forget, in preparation for exam week, the Dulles District teams are playing again tonight and many will also suit up Saturday. Now for your new rankings... Read full entry and discussion »

It's Tuesday, which means it's time for Top Performers. We had a number of tremendous individual performances over the past week, and this is where we try to highlight some of those efforts on a weekly basis. We've got a lot to get to today, including updated Dulles District standings, so let's get right to it... Read full entry and discussion »
Welcome back to another edition of the Monday (Afternoon) Quarterback. We had some great games over the weekend, highlighted by Dominion's big win before a packed house at Potomac Falls. Among the other results, Park View upset Broad Run, Heritage won its second straight and Valley continued its hot streak with two more district wins. For the girls, Freedom and County remained perfect, setting up tonight's big district clash for first, Broad Run handled Park View and Potomac Falls dismantled winless Dominion. Today we'll take a quick look back at those games, revisit some leftovers from the Titans-Panthers game and preview tonight's full slate of Dulles District matchups. Read full entry and discussion »
If we have to tell you which of tonight's games is the Game of the Week, you must not be paying attention. There are only two undefeated boys' teams left in the Dulles District. They both happen to reside in Sterling. They split their two meetings last season. And they don't really like each other all that much. That's right, tonight's big matchup features the Titans of Dominion traveling 2.5 miles to visit their arch-rival Potomac Falls Panthers. Tenorio and I will both be in the house for what we expect will be a heck of a game. But first, we've got to break it down... Read full entry and discussion »
It's been a while since we've thrown down here on Extra Points Island, but the holiday break is long over and it's time to get back to the debate. Today, Tenorio and I will go back and forth about some of the top young stars in the area. Pay attention, because you'll be seeing and hearing many of these players' names quite a bit more in the next couple years. Let's Throwdown! Read full entry and discussion »

Welcome back to the Top 5 Power Poll. We had some good matchups on the hardwood last night and now it's time to see how Loudoun teams fared and where they sit in this week's installment of the rankings. With the gloomy weather outside, exams fast approaching for students and that post-holiday luster wearing off, we felt our Top 5 teams on both the boys' and girls' sides might appreciate a little pep talk. They've made it this far and remain in the hunt for district titles and postseason berths, so Tenorio and I offer a few words of encouragement for the road ahead. Are either of us qualified for this line of work? Not entirely, but we did stay at a Holiday Inn Express in Lynchburg for the football state championships...so at least we've got that going for us. Here's hoping this doesn't come off sounding too much like a trip to Dr. Lou's office... Read full entry and discussion »

There were 11 games on the court last night in Loudoun (in spite of the inclement weather, for a change) including a few important Dulles District bouts. On the boys' side, Potomac Falls and Dominion both held serve at home, setting up a tasty battle for first place on Friday night in the Panther Pit. Loudoun County and Freedom remained perfect for the girls and we can't wait for their next meeting on Monday night. In AAA action, the Stone Bridge boys ended their losing skid and the Loudoun Valley girls won another nail-biter in the Cedar Run district. Be sure to check out how these results impacted today's Top 5 Power Polls here. Here's a full look at Tuesday's games... Read full entry and discussion »
It's time for another edition of Tuesday's Top Performers, but today won't be just like any other Tuesday. Due to the small number of games played since last Tuesday (11 to be exact), rather than naming the entire rosters from the Loudoun County-Potomac Falls boys' and girls' matchups last night, we're going to give you the Top 10 scorers in the County for this season so far. We'll also give touch briefly on the three games that took place last night and update the Dulles District standings. It's a jam-packed issue, so let's get it started... Welcome to the first edition of Monday (Afternoon) Quarterback in the New Year! There wasn't much action on the hardwood over the weekend, but a few teams took to the court on Saturday. On the boys' side, Valley ran it's winning streak to three with a big win against district foe Liberty while Park View's girls notched a come-from-behind non-district victory against Washington-Lee. Below you'll find a few notes from each of those games as well as previews for tonight's contests. I've also included a From the Notebook breakdown of Loudoun Valley after Tenorio and I both saw them in action at the Leesburg Honda Broad Run/Stone Bridge Holiday Tournament last week. Let's get rolling... Read full entry and discussion »

Happy New Year sports fans! With no games on tap for tonight and a very busy week ahead of us, I've decided to use today's Breakdown to take a look at Monday's big matchup between Loudoun County and Potomac Falls. We'll have another GOTW next Friday with a full slate of district matchups on the slate. Monday's game is a big one for both teams as the Raiders try to snap their three-game skid and notch their first Dulles District win while the Panthers look to open up their lead in the standings. This is as about as close as it comes to a must-win for County as falling to 0-3 in the league would be a deep hole to dig their way out of. Potomac Falls has six of it's five of it's six games out of the break at home where they are very hard to beat. It should be a dandy, so let's break it down... Read full entry and discussion »
