Broad Run 8, Dominion 1
After edging Potomac Falls on Wednesday night in Ashburn, the only thing standing between the Broad Run Spartans and their second consecutive Dulles District regular season title were the Titans of Dominion. Behind another strong start from senior Trey Brocke, the visiting Spartans cruised past their hosts to claim the championship and a spot in next week's Virginia AA Region II tournament.
It was the second time in as many years that Broad Run's No. 2 was on the mound with the regular season title in the balance and he came through once again. Brocke (6-1) pitched six innings, allowing one run on seven hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.
"He's sort of the forgotten man with all the attention Cole Shain gets," Broad Run coach Pat Cassidy said. "He beat Park View on the last day of the regular season last year to win the title and he's been huge for us again this year."
Senior catcher Tommy Meier, Shain (the designated hitter on the night) and Brocke all had two hits to lead the Spartans' offense and Shain scored two runs.
By clinching the regular season championship, the Spartans earned the top seed in the district tournament. Play begins on Saturday when Broad Run will host eighth-seeded Freedom.
A win on senior night would have given the Titans third place, instead they will likely finish in fourth – despite sharing the same 8-6 league record as No. 3 Park View. Dominion will host Heritage, who they beat 4-2 on Wednesday night, on Saturday in Sterling.
