Wednesday Baseball Round-Up

Matt Brooks at 11:58 a.m., May 15, 2008

Dominion 4, Heritage 2

Needing a win to secure a home game in the first round of the Dulles District tournament, the Titans got a key 4-2 road win at Heritage on Wednesday night.

Trey Reed took the loss for the Pride, pitching six innings and giving up only two earned runs. Two defensive errors put the winning runs on the board for Dominion. Depending on their result in their home finale tonight against Broad Run, the Titans (11-8, 8-5 AA Dulles) will finish either third or fourth and face Briar Woods or Heritage in the first round.

Heritage Stats:
Reed L 6 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 6 K, BB, HBP, 6 H
Lewkovich 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H

Peters 1-for-3 Sac
Reed 2-for-2 BB, Sac, 2 SB
Rogerson 1-for-3 Sac, 2K SB, RBI, R
Harvey 1-for-3 RBI, BB, SB
Clayton 0-for-3
Polkowski 0-for-3
Hoffman 1-for-3
Massey 1-for-3 SB
Flinton 0-for-1 K
Zarobila 1-for-2 R
Bowers SB

The Pride finish the regular season at 8-12 overall and 7-7 in the district.

Park View 11, Briar Woods 1

Jonathan Mason (4-2) picked up the win for the Patriots (12-9, 8-6) and went 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, a triple, three RBIs and two walks. With the win and Heritage’s loss, Park View clinches a home playoff game in Saturday’s Dulles District tournament first round. Their seed will depend on the result of Dominion’s game tonight against Broad Run.

Culpeper 6, Loudoun Valley 1

Culpeper southpaw Brad Settle pitched six innings allowing only three hits while striking out nine Viking hitters to lead the Blue Devils to a 6-1 victory on senior night. Cody Whitlock came in and pitched a scoreless 7th inning.

The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st when sophomore Andrew Creamer hit an RBI single scoring sophomore Alex Owens from second base. That would be it for the visiting Vikings as Creamer, Owens and pitcher Kevin Rinek were the only players to get hits off Settle.

Culpeper put four runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning and added two more in the 6th for the final 6-1 margin. Designated hitter Brandon Mack (2-for-3, two runs scored), third baseman Jeremy Brown (1-for-2, walk, two runs scored), and first baseman Hunter Kinney (1-for-2, double) led the Culpeper offense.

With the loss the Vikings record fell to 9-10 overall and 5-8 in the AAA Cedar Run District. Their final game is on Friday at Stonewall Jackson and regardless of the result Valley will finish sixth in the district standings. The Cedar Run District playoffs begin next week.
