Broad Run Hires Three New Coaches

Broad Run announced the hiring of three new coaches on Wednesday, including a replacement for long time boys' basketball coach Larry Boomer.

The Spartans named John Costello as the new coach of the team, said Broad Run athletic director Jack Kirby. Costello, who has coached in different capacities at Broad Run for 12 years, was most recently the freshman head coach and a varsity assistant.

Costello is also the golf coach and coached the girls varsity coach at one point, according to Kirby.

"He has had three children graduate from here, he is pretty engrained in the community," Kirby said. "He's been a very successful with the freshman team the last couple years and he's ready to step up.

All of those qualities, plus he's got a great personality, very outgoing, very upbeat. Just the total package. He knows all the kids, he lives in Ashburn, he's been on the staff, he's been in the school. We kind of nicknamed him the Mayor of Ashburn."

Costello expressed his excitement at taking over the program.

"It's very exciting," he said. "It was great to see how excited the kids were, that was a lot of fun for me also. Head coach is not just a title, it comes with a lot of responsibility. You're not only coaching your team, you're coaching everyone in the program. I'm excited to have the opportunity to do that."

Costello also said he hopes to follow Boomer's legacy.

"I am coming from behind a guy who was a genteleman and I'm hoping I can do something along the lines of what he did as far as helping the kids. I'm excited to have the opportunity."

Broad Run also named Ellen Petty the varsity volleyball coach and Melissa Wright the varsity cheerleading coach.

"Ellen has been the varsity assistant and she's a Broad Run grad and she's going to do a good job," Kirby said.
