The VHSL announced today that the 2008 Group AAA football championships will be played at Virginia Tech's Lane Stadium/Worsham field. Last season, Stone Bridge won the Virginia AAA Division 5 state championship played at UVA.

Here is the press release:

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — The Virginia High School League (VHSL) 2008 Group AAA Football Championships will be played at Virginia Tech’s Lane Stadium/Worsham Field. The Division 5 and 6 football finals will be held Saturday, December 6, 2008. The Division 5 game is tentatively scheduled to begin at noon, and the Division 6 game at 4:30 p.m.

“Last year’s games at UVA afforded an exciting and first-class experience for all participants, and we are thrilled that fans of high school football will again have an ideal setting for their championships,” said VHSL Executive Director Ken Tilley. “We want our student athletes to play in a big-time atmosphere and have an outstanding championship experience and we know that playing at Virginia Tech’s Lane Stadium/Worsham Field will provide that experience, not only for the players and coaches, but for all fans attending the finals.”

The VHSL Executive Committee voted 25-1 on Wednesday to approve Tech’s bid to host the Division 5 and 6 Group AAA football games at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field in 2008.

“It was obvious that Virginia Tech wanted these games, and the bid was the best of several that were received. The venue will also allow us to maintain the doubleheader format and to provide live statewide telecasts of both games.”

Also approved by the Executive Committee was Liberty University to host the Division 3 and 4 Group AA football championships in 2008. In February the VHSL had scheduled the 2008 Division 1 and 2 Group A football championships for the Salem Football Stadium.

Additional items decided Wednesday by the VHSL Executive Committee included approval of the expanded VHSL State Basketball Championships to include division playoffs for Group AA schools. Six games will be played each day – Tuesday, March 10, through Saturday, March 14, 2009 – all at the Siegel Center, Virginia Commonwealth University; moving the first practice date for football in 2008 from August 1 to July 28; and Group A boys and girls state soccer pairings to include all four Group A regions.
