The Dulles District boys’ singles tournament saw three tightly contested matches that went the distance Tuesday.
In the first semifinal Briar Woods’ top-seeded tandem of seniors Stephen Law and Patrick Melbourne were pushed to a decisive third set before defeating the No. 4 pairing of junior Brandon Hall and senior Akhil Pal from Dominion 6-4, 6-7, 6-2.
The second semifinal featured just as much drama as the second seed Potomac Falls team of senior Andrew Morris and sophomore Adam Gonder out-lasted Loudoun County’s duo of junior Peter Satagaj and senior Jeremy Wetzel in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.
The final turned out to be another three-set thriller as Morris and Gonder edged Law and Melbourne 6-3, 6-7, 7-6. Both teams had their opportunities to close out the match, but the team that was down each time fought back by trading breaks throughout the match. It was the fourth time the two doubles teams faced off this season with Briar Woods winning a tie-breaker last week to claim the regular season district title. But the Panthers got their revenge, evening the season series at 2-2 and taking the tournament title.
In the girls’ tournament, hosted by Potomac Falls, Loudoun County’s No. 1 team of sophomore Megan Hurley and junior Kerry Sarver battled back from one set down to defeat Heritage’s Meleah Nassar and Annie Replogle in a three-set final to win the tournament title, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Hurley and Sarver advanced to the final by beating Freedom’s Carla Wong and Joanna Tayman in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Nassar and Replogle had to go three sets to take out Dominion’s Michelle Lettman and Lindsey Gulla, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
