Loudoun Valley junior Kiersten Pappas advanced to the final of the Virginia AAA girls' tennis singles tournament at Jefferson District Park in Falls Church Friday morning after her opponent retired one game into the third and final set.
Michelle Nguyen of South County won the first set, 6-2, before Pappas battled back to win a second-set tiebreaker, 7-6. Pappas had taken a 1-0 lead in the third before Nguyen retired.
Pappas will face Katie Blow of Mills Godwin on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Jefferson District Park for the state singles title.
Meantime, down in Radford, Broad Run scored five runs in the first inning and went on to an 8-0 victory over Salem in the semifinals of the Virginia AA softball tournament on Friday afternoon.
The Spartans (27-0), who won their 56th consecutive game, will face Tunstall at 1 p.m. at Radford in the final as they vie for their second consecutive state title.
Also at Radford, the Broad Run girls' soccer team knocked off Hidden Valley, 4-1, in a Virginia AA state semifinal. The Spartans remain undefeated and will play in the state title game on Saturday at noon.
The Post's Matt McFarland, Matthew Stanmyre and Matt Brooks will have complete details later tonight.
