We've gotten through the state semifinals and there is just one team left standing. It's an Ashburn school, but perhaps not the one many people would have suspected at the start of the year. Broad Run is through and will play for a state championship on Saturday, while Stone Bridge was sent home with a 38-8 loss in Hampton.
With that being said, it's time to wrap up the season for Stone Bridge. Anything less than a state championship was disappointing for the Bulldogs, and I think you saw that on their faces after the game. But the accomplishments they have had in the past few years is remarkable. Just two losses in two years with a state championship, nothing to hang your heads about.
Still, let's take a look back:
One Step Back: There was really only one blip on the season for the Bulldogs and it was a big one. Against Phoebus, Stone Bridge was simply outmatched on the field -- and I agree with Mickey, you couldn't really tell if it was just this one game or overall. The offensive line couldn't figure out the Phantoms pass rush, and it was obvious why. With West Virginia-bound Dominik Davenport in the middle and two extremely talented pass rushers on the outside -- for my money No. 7 Daquan Romero was the best player on the field for Phoebus (and he's a SOPHOMORE) -- and with the Bulldogs forced to go spread early as they trailed, that played right into the hands of this athletic Phoebus team. You can't have six turnovers in a game and expect to win, and too much went wrong early for Stone Bridge to recover. As for the rest of the year, Stone Bridge was impressive. They beat up on the teams they should have beat up on, and handled business at Edison -- not an easy thing to do. I know this team meant a lot to Mickey, and look for a story in Thursday's Extra that wraps up the Bulldogs season a bit more.
One Step Forward: It's tough to say what the Bulldogs will look like last year. They return Kyle Gouveia, who has experience playing quarterback and also got plenty of PT on defense. They also bring back Marcus Harris, who impressed in his role behind Daniel Allen this year. But other than that, Stone Bridge loses 30 seniors, including I believe 20 of 22 starters. Of course, Mickey Thompson has proven his ability to coach and Stone Bridge has been consistently good since the school opened. Still, I don't know if fans should expect the same 35-point beat downs the Bulldogs have been handing out the past few years.
Keep An Eye On: RB Marcus Harris - The sophomore saw a lot of action this season in the second half of blowouts, and those minutes came up big as the season wore on and he saw more meaningful action -- including against Edison. Harris finished with 676 yards and 10 total touchdowns, and he has shown flashes of being a very capable starting back next season for Stone Bridge. Stone Bridge may have several areas of concern as far as who will step in where for the departing seniors, but I don't think running back is atop that list. - PT
Spartans March On
When the Broad Run fans heard the final score of the Stone Bridge-Phoebus game, the Spartan faithful let out a collective groan - which might have been more of a gasp - for their Ashburn neighbors. But now it's Broad Run who will carry on the torch for Loudoun County as they look forward to the first state championship game appearance in school history.
We'll have plenty of coverage on the build up to Saturday's matchup with Amherst as the week goes on, but here are some leftovers to chew on in the meantime...
We're expecting another grind-it-out defensive struggle against Amherst, which edged Pulaski 13-7 in the other semifinal. Much more on the Lancers (and their password protected school site, which is called 'Aged Steel' at the top of your browser for whatever reason.) as we work on our hacking skill throughout the week. (Just kidding, we'll probably just call their athletic department). Also, keep an eye out for more recapping Saturday's win and previewing Saturday's game in your Washington Post sports section in addition to your one stop spot for Broad Run football news, LoudounExtra.com- MB
