P. Thompson Starts at QB, SB Wins 42-28

Paul Tenorio at 7:31 p.m., August 29, 2008 (Updated at 10:03 p.m., August 29, 2008)

Patrick Thompson, who ruptured a tendon in the ring finger of his throwing hand two weeks ago, started at quarterback for Stone Bridge against West Springfield Friday. Thompson, a senior, was seen warming up before the game with a glove on his hand. When asked if he was starting, Thompson smiled and nodded.

UPDATE: Thompson got the Bulldogs on the board quickly. After Stone Bridge intercepted a pass, Thompson ran it in from six yards to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead with 9:09 left in the first quarter.

UPDATE:A little more than two minutes later, Thompson hit Michael Prince on a screen pass that turned into a 91-yard touchdown pass play to give Stone Bridge a 14-0 lead with 6:56 left in the first quarter.

UPDATE: On the Bulldogs' third offensive play, they scored their third touchdown, this time on a 51-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Thompson to his brother Zach with 5:44 left in the first quarter.

UPDATE: West Springfield got one back on a 19-yard touchdown pass by Bryn Renner to make it 21-7 by the end of the first quarter.

UPDATE: Stone Bridge extended its lead to 28-7 on a 22-yard run by Prince with 11:52 left in the half. Prince added a 45-yard scoring run with 5:28 to go in the second quarter to extend the lead to 35-7.

UPDATE: Patrick Thompson threw his third touchdown pass of the half with 51.9 seconds left in the second quarter when he hooked up with Prince on a 30-yard scoring play to make it 42-7.

IN OTHER GAMES: Meantime, Potomac Falls is holding a 19-14 halftime lead at home against Martinsburg and Briar Woods leads Millbrook, 15-13, at the half of their game.

AT THE HALF... Stone Bridge leads 42-7. To recap, the Bulldogs scored touchdowns on their first three offensive plays. Prince has four touchdowns (two rushing, two receiving) and Thompson has obviously provided a boost without pushing it. Other than the 30-yard touchdown pass, he has not aired it out much. The other TD passes were off short throws that turned into big gains.

AFTER THREE QUARTERS... It's still 42-7. Stone Bridge ate up a lot of clock by keeping it on the ground in the form of eight straight rushes by Marcus Harris.

UPDATE: Patrick Thompson has called it a day, as have most of his teammates. West Springfield has added two touchdowns to make it 42-21 with 3:46 to go.

MEANWHILE, OVER IN STERLING... Potomac Falls has gotten into an interesting shootout with Martinsburg. The Panthers lead 33-30.... after three quarters! Perhaps even more surprising, this game was only 6-0 after the first quarter. Both teams scored on every third-quarter possession. We'll see how this one ends...

UPDATE: Renner throws a 23-yard touchdown pass to Dan Collins to make it 42-28 with 1:22 left.

UPDATE: It's a final, 42-28. Stone Bridge opens season in impressive fashion against a top-10 team, with a huge performance from Michael Prince and an emotional boost by Patrick Thompson. Check back later when we post a full writeup on the game along with photos and video.
