As part of Loudounextra.com's 2008 football preview, we ask four questions of a key member from each of the Loudoun County high school squads. Today, it's Potomac Falls Coach Scott Woodlief.
You've publically said you plan on throwing the ball more this year. What are you looking for from your receivers and quarterback that will help a more pass-heavy offense succeed in the Dulles District?
“I’m hoping Chad steps his game up and Chris steps his game up and Gregory does the same. And Tarrell is a junior. So we have those guys who have now been together for three years – Chad, Chris and Gregory all started as sophomores. They’re familiar with one another and I think this is going to be their big year.”
Last year you had eight players going both ways. Are you expecting that number to stay the same this year and how will the larger turnout you had this summer impact that decision?
“Our skill guys are the ones who play both ways, and I think that hurts us. Asking a kid to play four full quarters, that’s hard high school football. And now people go no-huddle to try to speed up the game. Everybody always says, ‘Coach, the no-huddle is in, when are we going to do some no huddle?’ I’m thinking we need that 25 seconds. Our guys are looking forward to that 25 seconds to get a quick breather.”
Where do you think you'll be able to find more depth this season?
“The younger guys have stepped up this year. We’ve seen a lot of things from the guys on the J.V. team last year that we didn’t expect. They’ve worked really hard in the off-season. I think they wanted to become better as players and I think they’ve done that. I hope that they’ll be able to spell for a player during our games.”
What's the biggest area where your team needs to improve to be successful this season?
“I always say if you can get through those last eight minutes of the third quarter and those first three or four of the fourth quarter – that was the time-span that we struggled with last year. We’d start off strong in the third quarter, the adrenaline is keeping you together after halftime. But after four minutes your body wears back down again. The kids always gave what they had at the end and the last three minutes or so, they could do that. But it was just that stretch in between that we really struggled, and I honestly believe that’s where we lost our football games.”
“I’m hoping that kids will be able to step up this year and help us. Without depth, we’re not going to be very good. I can’t expect my whole receiving corps and my quarterback to play defense every snap of the ball.”
