Player of the Year

Johnny Bladel, Center Field, Stone Bridge, Sr.
The Bulldogs star received his second straight AAA Liberty District Player of the Year title and added Northern Region Co-Player of the Year honors after leading his team at the plate, in center field and on the mound. The JMU-bound outfielder batted .444 with 5 home runs, 3 triples and 20 RBI, and had a .587 on-base percentage. And in his first stint as a varsity starting pitcher, Bladel went 7-1 with a 1.74 ERA, 66 strikeouts and 3 saves.

A four-year starter who calls every pitch for the Spartans, Johnson earned Dulles District Player of the Year honors and batted .434 with one home run and 20 RBI in the regular season before leading Broad Run to its third consecutive Virginia AA state championship. Will play at James Madison.

One of the top defensemen in the state, Swankowski had 63 groundballs and 43 takeaways to help the Vikings achieve a perfect season in the Virginia AAA Cedar Run District. Verbally committed to Virginia for 2010.

Shannon Harkey, Loudoun Valley, Jr.
Harkey (62 goals and 53 assists) was instrumental in leading the Vikings to the Virginia state semifinals, and their 19-1 record was the best in school history. The fourth in a lacrosse-playing family (the other three are on college teams), Harkey was an All-American nominee this year.

The All-Met pick breezed to Dulles District titles in the 1,600 (4:29.62) and 3,200 (9:42.81). Earlier this season, he posted career-best times in the two-mile (9:15.81) and 3,200 (9:11.34), both of which rank fifth among Virginia boys.

Lee showed impressive range at the Virginia AA Dulles District championships, capturing gold in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. She ran a season-best time in the mile (5:05.41) at Southern Track Classic before finishing off the season with a state title in the 800 (2:16.70).

In his second year with the Spartans, Chang claimed the singles and doubles district tournament titles and helped lead Broad Run to its first Virginia AA Dulles District team championship since 1996. He reached the regional semifinals in both singles and doubles and completed the year with a 17-3 mark in singles and 14-2 in doubles.

Kiersten Pappas, Loudoun Valley, Sr.
Valley's senior No. 1 dominated the AAA Cedar Run district yet again in 2009, guiding her team to district and Northwest Region titles and a state tournament run that ended with a loss in the semifinals. For the second consecutive year, Pappas reached the state tournament final, falling in a marathon two-set match with Marshall's Faby Chaillo. Along with partner Juliana Jacangelo, Pappas also advanced to the state doubles final where they lost in three sets. Pappas, who never lost a Cedar Run district match, will play at George Mason next year.
